Car rental FAQ

The most common questions before you book. Still stuck? Contact us or browse our travel blog for the full detail on each topic.

What do I need to rent a car?

The main driver's valid driving licence (held for the minimum period the company requires, usually 1-2 years), a card in the driver's name for the deposit, and ID or passport. Driving outside the EU on a non-EU licence often requires an International Driving Permit.

Do I need a credit card or is a debit card enough?

Most companies require a credit card in the main driver's name to hold the deposit. Some accept debit cards with conditions (mandatory coverage, limits). We cover it in the renting without a credit card guide.

How does the deposit work?

At pickup the company blocks an amount on your card as a guarantee (not a charge). It is released when you return the car with no issues. The amount depends on the vehicle category.

What insurance is included, and is full coverage worth it?

The basic booking includes insurance with an excess (you cover part of any damage). You can reduce that excess to zero with full coverage. On unfamiliar roads or in high season it usually pays off. See our car rental insurance guide.

Can I add an additional driver?

Yes. Add them at the counter with their licence; on many rates the second driver (spouse/partner) is included or has a small daily fee.

Can I pick up in one place and drop off in another?

Yes, that is a one-way rental. It usually carries a surcharge depending on distance and country. When searching, set different pickup and drop-off locations to see the real price.

How do I cancel a booking?

Bookings with free cancellation can be cancelled from the confirmation email at no cost up to the stated deadline (typically 48h before pickup). Always check the cancellation policy before booking.
