How to rent a car, step by step

Last updated: 2026-07-03

Renting a car for a trip is straightforward once you know what to look at. Here are the steps and the details that avoid surprises at the counter.

1. Search by destination and dates

Enter the pickup city or airport, your dates and, if you'll return it elsewhere, the drop-off office. Booking ahead in high season is usually much cheaper.

2. Compare offers

Compare more than the price: check the insurance excess, the fuel policy (full-to-full is best), mileage, and whether the deposit fits your card. A cheap rate with a high excess can get expensive after the smallest scratch.

3. Book with free cancellation

Whenever you can, pick a rate with free cancellation and pay at pickup — it gives you flexibility if plans change. You'll get a confirmation email with the voucher.

4. Pick up the car

Bring with you:

Inspect the car before leaving and photograph any existing damage.

5. Drop it off

Return it with the agreed fuel level and on time to avoid charges. The held deposit is released once they confirm there are no issues.
