Why hire a car in Santorini
Santorini is one of the world's most photographed islands, and most of those photographs are taken from the caldera villages of Oia, Imerovigli and Fira — all reachable on foot or by the island's bus network, which runs to a reasonable schedule in peak season. But the island has another side that most visitors miss entirely: the southern tip around Akrotiri with its Bronze Age ruins and extraordinary lighthouse viewpoint, the eastern coast where the winemakers grow Assyrtiko grapes in circular vine nests against the wind, and the black and red sand beaches south of Fira that remain quieter than the caldera road bustle.
Santorini is small — you can drive its 18 km length in under 30 minutes — but its narrow caldera-side roads get extremely congested in summer, and the bus service to Akrotiri, Ancient Thira and the east coast villages is infrequent and slow. A hire car gives you the whole island: an early morning lighthouse run before the day-trippers arrive from Fira, a self-guided wine tasting tour through the Santo Wines and Gavalas wineries, and the freedom to be at Oia's famous sunset viewpoint an hour before the crowds — rather than fighting for space after a long wait for the bus.
