Why hire a car in Palermo

Palermo is one of the Mediterranean's most underrated cities — layers of Norman, Arab, Byzantine and Baroque architecture crammed into a chaotic, vital centre. The Palazzo dei Normanni, the Cappella Palatina and the street food stalls of the Ballarò market are best explored on foot. But Sicily is a large island with distances that quickly exceed what buses can reasonably connect, and the region's highlights are scattered from one end to the other.

The Valley of the Temples at Agrigento — one of the finest Greek archaeological sites outside Greece — is 130 km south-east. The salt pans and windmills west of Trapani glow orange at sunset and are 100 km from Palermo. Selinunte, the ancient Greek city on the south-west coast, is one of the largest archaeological parks in the world and rarely crowded even in high season. Taormina and Mount Etna are at the other end of the island, a three-hour drive east along the north coast — the A20 Palermo–Messina motorway is one of Sicily's great drives, tunnelling through headlands above the Tyrrhenian Sea. A hire car from PMO is the only practical way to cover the island properly.

What to know before you drive in Sicily

  • Collect at Palermo Falcone-Borsellino Airport (PMO). Hire desks are in the arrivals hall, about 32 km west of the city centre via the A29 motorway. The drive to Palermo takes about 35 minutes. Compare Palermo car hire prices →
  • Don't drive in central Palermo. The old city streets are narrow, one-way systems confuse sat-navs, and the city's traffic culture is confrontational. Park at the Foro Italico or near the train station and walk or take a taxi into the centre.
  • Italy drives on the right. Speed limits: 130 km/h on motorways (110 in rain), 90 on secondary roads, 50 in towns. Speed cameras are common. The A20 east has fixed cameras at various points.
  • Motorway tolls on the A19 and A29. The main motorways around Palermo carry tolls. Cash and card are accepted at toll booths. Bring small change — exact change lanes are quicker.
  • Petrol stations close for lunch. Many rural stations in Sicily close from noon to 3 p.m. Plan accordingly on longer drives between towns — fill up in the morning before heading inland.
  • Also visiting eastern Sicily? Taormina and Etna are a natural base at the island's other end. Check whether a one-way rental to Cagliari or another island is available for multi-island itineraries.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Palermo?
Yes — Sicily is a large island and the best sites are widely scattered. The Valley of the Temples, Selinunte, Trapani, Taormina and Mount Etna all require a car. Public transport reaches some of them, but with difficulty and at the mercy of infrequent timetables.
Where do I pick up a hire car in Palermo?
Palermo Falcone-Borsellino Airport (PMO), about 32 km west of the city, is the main pickup point. All major brands have desks in the arrivals hall. Some agencies also have offices in the city centre near the train station.
How far is the Valley of the Temples from Palermo?
About 130 km south-east via the A19 motorway, taking around 1 hour 30 minutes. Agrigento's Valley of the Temples is one of the finest Greek archaeological sites in the world and a must on any Sicily road trip. Allow at least half a day at the site.
Can I drive from Palermo to Taormina?
Yes — the A20 motorway runs 230 km east along the Tyrrhenian coast to Messina, and Taormina is 260 km from Palermo, about 2.5–3 hours. The drive along the north coast is spectacular, tunnelling through headlands above the sea. It's a natural first or last leg of a full Sicily circuit.
Are there tolls on Sicilian motorways?
Yes — the A19 Palermo–Catania and the A29 to Trapani both carry tolls. Cash and card are accepted at booths. Tolls are modest by European standards — a full Palermo–Catania run costs around €8–10.
Which car hire companies operate in Palermo?
Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget, Sixt and Italian agencies like Maggiore operate at PMO. Local operators often offer the best rates for longer Sicily circuits. Compare all Palermo car hire prices →
