Why hire a car in Madrid

Madrid's centre is easily covered on foot and by metro — Sol, the Retiro, the Prado Museum and Malasaña are all connected by one of the densest urban transit networks in Europe. If you're staying only in the capital, a car adds nothing and costs you convenience, between traffic and parking. But Madrid is also the best possible base for seeing Castile, and that's where a car changes the trip completely.

Toledo, with its walled old town above the Tagus river, is 70 km south. Segovia and its Roman aqueduct sit 90 km north, across the Sierra de Guadarrama. Ávila, Spain's best-preserved walled city, is 110 km north-west. The Monastery of El Escorial, just 50 km away, and Aranjuez and Chinchón, under 50 km south, round out a range of day trips that by train or bus mean early starts and limited timetables, and that by car you do entirely on your own schedule.

What to know before you drive in Madrid

  • Collect at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD). MAD is 13 km north-east of the centre, with all the major brands across T1, T2 and T4. The drive into the centre via the A-2 and M-30 takes 20-40 minutes depending on traffic. Compare Madrid car hire prices →
  • Mind the Low Emission Zone (Madrid Central). The historic centre and much of the Centro district are a Low Emission Zone: you need the DGT environmental sticker (most modern hire cars carry one, usually C or ECO) and some streets are residents-only. It's most practical to leave the car in a peripheral car park and move around that ring on foot or by metro.
  • Spain drives on the right. Limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 90-100 km/h on regular roads, 50 km/h in town. The M-30 and M-40 ring roads are both toll-free.
  • Toll radiales as an alternative. The R-2, R-3, R-4 and R-5 toll motorways are usually clearer than the A-1 to A-5 motorways during Madrid's rush-hour exodus. The AP-6 tunnel toward Segovia is also tolled; the parallel national road is free but slower and windier through the mountain pass.
  • Parking in the Castilian towns. Toledo and Ávila have car parks just outside the walls — don't try to drive into the historic centre. Segovia and Chinchón are just as easy to park at the edge of town.
  • Heading further? The A-4 south connects Madrid with Córdoba and Seville; the A-2 east reaches Barcelona in about 6 hours.

Where to collect your hire car in Madrid

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Madrid?
Depends on your plan. To move only within the city, the metro and commuter rail are faster and cheaper than a car. But if you want to see Toledo, Segovia, Ávila or El Escorial in a day, a hire car gives you a freedom of schedule that train or bus don't offer.
Where do I collect my hire car in Madrid?
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), 13 km north-east of the centre, is the main pickup point with all the major brands across the terminals. There are also offices near Atocha and Chamartín for those arriving by train.
Can I drive into Madrid's centre with a hire car?
The Centro district is a Low Emission Zone (Madrid Central): you need the DGT environmental sticker, which most recent hire cars carry. Still, several streets in the historic core are residents-only — it's most comfortable to park at a car park on the edge and walk in.
How long does it take from Madrid to Toledo or Segovia?
To Toledo, about 70 km via the AP-41, around 45 minutes. To Segovia, about 90 km across the Sierra de Guadarrama via the AP-6, around 1 hour. Both make for a comfortable half-day trip from Madrid.
Are there tolls on the roads around Madrid?
The M-30 and M-40 ring roads are free. The R-2 to R-5 radiales, which leave the city parallel to the A-1 to A-5 motorways, are tolled but usually carry less traffic. The AP-6 tunnel toward Segovia is also tolled; there's a free but slower alternative over the mountain road.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Madrid?
We compare the big international names (Sixt, Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Alamo, Enterprise, Budget) alongside trusted Madrid local firms such as Goldcar, Centauro and OK Mobility — over 1,000 providers in total. You see each price and book whichever suits you best, with free cancellation.
