10 Weekend Road Trips from Madrid (Under 3 Hours)

The best destinations for a weekend escape from Madrid by car: medieval towns, nature, water and gastronomy. All within 3 hours of the capital.

Madrid has one huge advantage that’s easy to overlook: it sits right in the middle of the Iberian Peninsula, and within 3 hours by car you can reach mountains, coastline, plateau, UNESCO World Heritage cities and some of the most beautiful villages in Spain.

Here are the 10 road trips we recommend most, grouped by travel style.

For nature and mountain lovers

1. La Pedriza and Manzanares el Real (1 hour)

The Sierra de Guadarrama regional park has some of the most spectacular granite landscapes on the Iberian Peninsula. La Pedriza is the favourite destination for Madrid’s hikers and climbers.

What to do: La Charca Verde trail (easy, 2–3 hours), visit the castle of Manzanares el Real (one of the best-preserved in Spain), swim in the Santillana reservoir in summer.

Drive time: 50 minutes from central Madrid via the A-1 or M-607.

2. Segovia (1 hour 15 minutes)

One of the most impressive cities in Spain for a day trip. The Roman Aqueduct, the Alcázar and the cathedral form a triangle that has no equal in Europe.

What to do: Walk Calle Real from the Aqueduct to the Alcázar, have roast suckling pig at Casa Duque or Mesón de Cándido, climb the cathedral tower.

Drive time: 1 hour 15 minutes via the AP-6. Free parking on Paseo de Ezequiel González, a 10-minute walk from the Aqueduct.

3. El Escorial and La Herrería forest (50 minutes)

The Monastery of El Escorial is one of the most important architectural works of the Spanish Renaissance. Combine it with the La Herrería forest for a circular walking route of 2–3 hours.

For fans of charming villages

4. Chinchón (45 minutes)

The main square of Chinchón is one of the most beautiful in Spain. Oval-shaped with wooden balconies, it doubles as a bullring in summer. The village is known for its anise liqueur and Castilian restaurants.

Must-do: eat at one of the restaurants with a terrace overlooking the square. Roast lamb and cocido are the local specialities.

Drive time: 45 minutes via the A-3 and M-311.

5. Sigüenza (2 hours)

One of the best-preserved medieval cities in Castile. The Romanesque cathedral, the castle converted into a parador and the stone lanes make Sigüenza a highly recommended escape.

Drive time: 2 hours via the A-2.

6. Sepúlveda and the Hoces del Duratón (2 hours)

The Hoces del Duratón Natural Park is one of Castile’s best-kept secrets. The Duratón river has carved a canyon with 100-metre walls where griffon vultures nest. Combine it with the medieval town of Sepúlveda for a perfect weekend trip.

Must-do: canoe or kayak through the gorge (available from Carrascal del Río). The roast lamb of Sepúlveda is famous throughout Castile.

For water and lakeside escapes

7. Cuenca and Ciudad Encantada (2 hours 15 minutes)

Cuenca is one of the most surprising destinations on the Meseta. The Hanging Houses, the UNESCO-listed old town and the Ciudad Encantada (a forest of karst rock formations) make Cuenca a very different kind of escape.

Drive time: 2 hours 15 minutes via the A-3.

8. Lagunas de Ruidera (2 hours 45 minutes)

Sixteen turquoise lakes in La Mancha, connected by natural waterfalls. In summer this is one of the best swimming spots near Madrid. Book accommodation months ahead in high season.

Drive time: 2 hours 45 minutes via the A-4 and CM-3115.

For food lovers

9. Toledo (1 hour)

The imperial city: three cultures (Christian, Muslim and Jewish) in a walled old town above the Tagus. One of the most photographed cities in Spain, easily seen in a comfortable day.

What to eat: Toledo marzipan (at Confitería Santo Tomé), bacalao a la toledana and stewed partridge.

Tip: arrive early to park. Old-town car parks fill up fast on weekends.

10. Ávila (1 hour 30 minutes)

The oldest walled city in Spain. The medieval walls (2.5 km perfectly preserved) can be walked on top. In summer there are night visits that are well worth doing.

What to eat: Ávila beef chop and the yemas de Santa Teresa sweet are the must-try local dishes.

Logistics tips:

  • Leave before 8:30 am on Saturdays — Madrid’s outbound traffic gets heavy after 9:30
  • Book a restaurant if you’re going to places like Chinchón or Sepúlveda in high season — they fill up
  • Old-town car parks in Segovia, Toledo and Ávila are the most convenient; free ones are a 10–15 minute walk

All these routes are perfect for a weekend or even a long day trip. And the best part: you can do several of them on different weekends without ever repeating the same destination.
