Compare car hire providers in Kotor

We compare the suppliers serving Tivat airport and the Bay of Kotor — a mix of established Montenegrin agencies and the international desks that operate here — so you see the real options side by side, with free cancellation on most bookings. Availability is smaller and more seasonal than at big-city airports, so it pays to check a few before you commit.

Why hiring a car in Kotor is worth it

Kotor sits at the head of a long, fjord-like bay, hemmed in by mountains that rise almost straight out of the water. The walled Old Town is beautiful but tiny and entirely car-free, and once you've walked the ramparts you'll want to get out onto the bay. The drives here are the attraction: the serpentine road up to Lovćen, with its roughly 25 hairpin bends and the view back down over the whole bay, and the coast road south through Budva to the islet of Sveti Stefan. None of that is comfortable to reach by bus.

Public transport exists — buses run along the coast to Budva and Tivat — but they're slow, seasonal and leave you stranded the moment you want a quiet beach in Morinj, a Lovćen viewpoint or the baroque waterfront at Perast and the Roman mosaics at Risan. With your own car you can loop the entire Bay of Kotor in a morning, climb to Lovćen National Park in the afternoon, and never check a timetable. For a few days exploring Montenegro's coast, car hire pays for itself in flexibility almost immediately.

What to know before you drive in Kotor

  • You drive on the right. Montenegro drives on the right-hand side of the road. If you're coming from the UK or Ireland, take your first roundabout and your first hairpin gently — the bulk of the car now sits on your left, and the Lovćen road is no place to get reacquainted with that.
  • Tivat airport is your nearest pickup. Tivat (TIV) is about 8 km from Kotor, a short transfer around the bay, and the easiest place to collect a car. Podgorica (TGD) and Dubrovnik in Croatia are alternatives, but a Dubrovnik pickup means a border crossing — tell the rental desk if you plan to cross into Montenegro. You can also collect in town. Tivat pickups are often the cheapest option, since most of the bay's car fleets are based there rather than in Kotor itself.
  • The roads are narrow and the bends are real. The Lovćen serpentine and the bay road are spectacular but tight, with blind corners, tour buses and steep drops above the water. Drive in daylight your first time, use low gears on the descents, and don't rush. A smaller car is far easier to thread through the narrow waterside villages of Dobrota, Perast and Risan than a big SUV.
  • Fuel, tolls and the ferry. Fill up in Kotor or Tivat before heading into the mountains, as stations thin out fast toward Lovćen and Cetinje. There are no motorway tolls on the coast, but the Sozina tunnel on the route to Podgorica has a small charge. The Kamenari–Lepetane (Verige) ferry across the bay narrows is a handy, cheap shortcut that saves the long drive around through Risan.
  • Licence, age and insurance excess. A UK or EU photocard licence is accepted for short stays; many other nationalities should bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. You'll usually need to be 21+ with a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit. Basic cover leaves you liable for a sizeable excess — reduce it to zero at booking, which is normally cheaper than the cover pushed at the desk. Compare Kotor car hire prices →
  • Local tip: don't drive into the Old Town. The walls are pedestrian-only and the paid parking just outside fills up and gets pricey in summer. Park further out toward Dobrota and walk in, or base yourself where parking is included — and avoid arriving mid-afternoon in July and August, when the bay road clogs with cruise-ship traffic backing up from the port.

Where to pick up your car in Kotor

Most visitors collect at Tivat airport (TIV), about 8 km away, while in-town pickups near the Old Town suit those arriving by bus or cruise ship.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Kotor?
For more than a day, yes. The Old Town is walkable, but the highlights — the Lovćen serpentine, the coast road to Budva and Sveti Stefan, and the bay villages of Perast and Risan — are slow or impossible by bus. A car lets you loop the whole Bay of Kotor and reach the viewpoints on your own schedule.
What do I need to hire a car in Kotor?
A valid driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit, and usually to be 21 or over. A UK or EU licence is fine for short stays; travellers from many other countries should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence. Bring your passport for ID.
Which side of the road do they drive on, and what are the roads like?
Montenegro drives on the right. The coast and bay roads are scenic but narrow, with the Lovćen climb featuring around 25 hairpin bends and steep drops to the water. Drive in daylight at first, use low gears downhill, and a smaller car will be much easier through the tight villages around the bay.
Should I pick up at Tivat airport or in Kotor town?
Tivat (TIV) is only about 8 km away and is usually the cheapest, simplest pickup, as most of the bay's fleets sit there. In-town collection suits cruise and bus arrivals. Dubrovnik airport in Croatia is an option too, but it means a border crossing — confirm cross-border cover before you book. Compare pickup points and prices →
What about insurance and the excess?
Basic cover handles collision and theft but leaves you liable for a sizeable excess on any damage — easy to run up on the narrow Lovćen and bay roads. You can reduce it to zero when you book, which is normally cheaper than the cover sold at the counter. If your own credit card already covers car hire, check the terms first.
Which car hire companies can I compare in Kotor?
You can compare whatever suppliers are actually serving Tivat airport and the bay for your dates — typically a mix of Montenegrin local agencies, who often hold the most cars on this stretch of coast, and a few international desks. Rather than fixing on one brand, compare what's available for your exact pickup point and dates, since that's usually where the value is in a market this size.
