Why hire a car in Lisbon

Lisbon is one of Europe's most compact and walkable capitals, and the tram network, metro and riverboat ferries cover the main sights without any need for a car. But Portugal is a country where the best things are spread out, and a hire car collected at Lisbon Airport makes the whole country accessible. Sintra, the palace-studded hill town 30 km west, deserves half a day; Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, is another 15 km beyond that. The Silver Coast beaches at Peniche, Ericeira and Nazaré — where the world-record big wave breaks — are all within 90 minutes north.

Heading south, the A2 motorway crosses the 25 de Abril Bridge and runs straight to the Alentejo plains and Algarve coast. Évora, the walled Roman city at the heart of Alentejo wine country, is under 90 minutes away. The Algarve is around two and a half hours — a long day trip or an easy overnight. Portugal's distances are modest and the roads are good; a hire car from Lisbon is the most flexible way to see the whole country rather than just the capital.

What to know before you drive around Lisbon

  • Collect at Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS). Hire desks are in the arrivals hall, 7 km north of the city centre. Most pickup points are at the terminal itself or a nearby car park connected by shuttle. Compare Lisbon car hire prices →
  • Lisbon centre driving is challenging. The city is built on seven hills, with steep narrow streets and trams sharing lanes with cars. Parking in the centre costs €1.50–2.50/hour and fills quickly. Collect the car when you're leaving the city, not when you arrive.
  • Via Verde toll transponders. Portuguese motorways use electronic tolling (Via Verde). Most hire cars include a Via Verde tag — a daily fee of around €1–2 applies when using it. Confirm with the agency. Without a tag, some motorways have no cash booths — you must pay online within 48 hours via the EASYToll website.
  • Portugal drives on the right. Speed limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 100 on main roads, 50 in towns. Fixed and mobile speed cameras are common throughout the country.
  • Sintra and Cascais parking. Both resort towns fill up in summer. Sintra has a park-and-ride system from the main car park — follow the signs and walk into the historic centre rather than driving up the palace road.
  • Heading south? The A2 south of Lisbon connects via the Alentejo to the Málaga area — manageable as a multi-day drive through southern Iberia.

Where to collect your hire car in Lisbon

Hire desks are in the arrivals hall at Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), 7 km north of the city. City-centre offices near Marquês de Pombal suit those who prefer to explore Lisbon on foot first.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Do I need a car to visit Lisbon?
Not for the city itself — trams, metro and walking cover everything. A hire car makes Sintra, Cascais, Óbidos, the Alentejo, Algarve and Atlantic coast beaches all accessible. Most visitors collect the car only when they're planning to leave the city.
Where do I pick up a hire car in Lisbon?
Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), 7 km north of the city centre, is the main pickup point with all major brands in the arrivals hall. City-centre offices near Marquês de Pombal and Entrecampos are also available.
Do Portuguese motorways have cash toll booths?
Some do, some don't. The older motorways have manual booths; newer ones (including much of the IC19 to Sintra and some A2 sections) are electronic only. Most hire cars include a Via Verde tag that handles all tolls automatically. If not, use the EASYToll website to pay within 48 hours.
How far is Sintra from Lisbon?
About 28 km west via the A37 or the IC19, taking 30–40 minutes by car. Sintra is also reachable by train from Rossio station in 40 minutes — a valid alternative in summer when Sintra car parks are full. By car, arrive before 9 a.m. in peak season.
Can I drive from Lisbon to the Algarve in a day?
Yes — the A2 south to Albufeira or Faro is around 280 km, taking about 2.5–3 hours on a good day. It's a comfortable drive and a natural first leg of a longer Portugal road trip. Expect heavier traffic on Friday afternoons in summer.
Which car hire companies operate in Lisbon?
Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, Budget, Sixt and Goldcar all operate at LIS. Portuguese local agencies and discount operators often offer the best rates on economy and compact classes. Compare all Lisbon car hire prices →
