Of the big international names, only Europcar has a confirmed presence in Zanzibar, with two pickup locations listed on the island. Avis shows up only through its southern African reseller (avis.co.za), which lists a single location — the Zanzibar Petro Fuel Station — rather than a proper branch of its own, and Hertz, Sixt, Enterprise and Budget don't operate here at all. What you can actually book are established regional suppliers such as Autounion, NUCarrentals and Surprice, alongside Europcar — compare them here on price, car type and cover rather than assuming a familiar brand is on the ground.

Why rent a car in Zanzibar

Stone Town's tangle of coral-stone alleys, carved wooden doors and the old House of Wonders is dense enough to fill a couple of days on foot alone. But the real case for a rental car is everything beyond it. Nungwi, on the island's northern tip, has the calmest, most swimmable beaches on Unguja and a harbour where wooden dhows are still built by hand. Paje and Jambiani, on the east coast, are where Zanzibar's kitesurfing scene lives, with reef-protected lagoons that turn shallow at low tide. In between, Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park protects the last patch of the island's native forest and the red colobo monkey, found nowhere else on Earth, and most visits pair it with a nearby spice-farm tour.

Shared dala-dala minibuses connect Stone Town to the main towns, but they leave when full, take the long way round picking up passengers, and rarely go door to door once you're past the main routes. With your own car you can string Jozani and Paje together in one day, since they sit close to each other in the island's south-centre, or spend a full day heading north to Nungwi and back at your own pace. Nungwi is roughly a ninety-minute drive from Stone Town, Paje about an hour, and Jozani around forty-five minutes — short enough that even a rental picked up for just a couple of days pays for itself in what you get to see.

What to know before you drive in Zanzibar

  • You drive on the left. Zanzibar keeps to the left-hand side of the road, the same system used in mainland Tanzania and Kenya. Overtake on the right, and give yourself a few careful minutes before joining the traffic around Stone Town's Creek Road and Darajani Market.
  • Your home licence alone isn't enough. Every foreign driver needs a temporary Zanzibar driving permit, issued quickly at the rental counter or the local traffic office for around $10-20 and valid for up to three months. An International Driving Permit isn't compulsory, but it's worth carrying alongside your licence anyway.
  • Airport pickup at ZNZ. Abeid Amani Karume International Airport sits about 8 km from Stone Town, roughly 15-20 minutes along the main paved road. Airport listings alone run into the hundreds of offers with free cancellation, from around $28 a day, including SUVs from about $24. Compare Zanzibar airport car rental prices →
  • Roads and conditions. The main routes — Stone Town to Nungwi and Stone Town to Paje — are paved and in good shape. Rural roads narrow fast once you leave them, with dust and potholes, so pick a 4x4 or a car with higher clearance if your plans go beyond the two main roads.
  • Speed limits and speed bumps. Expect 50 km/h through villages and 80 km/h on the open road, and watch for unmarked speed bumps as you pass through settlements — they slow traffic near schools and markets but appear with little warning.
  • Weather and night driving. Avoid rural roads after dark: lighting is minimal, and animals or pedestrians share the carriageway. The rainy seasons, March-May and November, can flood low-lying stretches, so check conditions before a longer drive in those months.
  • Arriving by ferry. If you're coming from Dar es Salaam by boat rather than flying into ZNZ, some suppliers also offer pickup near the port in Stone Town, with listings from around $21 a day — worth checking if your trip starts there instead of at the airport.

Where to pick up your car in Zanzibar

Most travellers collect near Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), about 8 km from Stone Town, though pickup in Stone Town itself or near the port (for ferry arrivals from Dar es Salaam) is also available.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Zanzibar?
Yes, if you plan to leave Stone Town. The old town itself is walkable, but Nungwi's beaches, the kite coast at Paje and Jambiani, and the red colobo monkeys of Jozani Forest only really work with your own car — the shared dala-dala minibuses run on their own schedule and skip most of the smaller turn-offs.
What documents do I need to rent a car in Zanzibar?
You'll need your home driving licence, a passport, and a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit — plus a temporary Zanzibar driving permit, which most suppliers arrange at the counter for around $10-20 and which is valid for up to three months. An International Driving Permit isn't required but is worth bringing along. Check what each supplier requires →
Which side of the road do they drive on in Zanzibar?
Zanzibar drives on the left, the same as mainland Tanzania and Kenya. Roads around Stone Town's markets get busy, so give yourself a few minutes to adjust, and pick a 4x4 if you're heading onto rural roads off the two main paved routes.
Can I pick up a rental car at Zanzibar airport?
Yes. Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) is about 8 km from Stone Town, roughly 15-20 minutes by road, and airport pickup runs into the hundreds of offers with free cancellation, typically from around $28 a day. Compare airport pickup options for ZNZ →
Can I pick up a car at the port instead of the airport?
Yes. If you're arriving by ferry from Dar es Salaam rather than flying into ZNZ, several suppliers offer pickup near the port in Stone Town, with listings from around $21 a day — useful if your trip starts there rather than at the airport.
Do I need a 4x4 to get around Zanzibar?
Not for the two main paved routes to Nungwi and Paje, which suit any car. Off those roads, or during the rainy seasons in March-May and November, a 4x4 or higher-clearance car makes rural tracks and unpaved village roads much easier.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Zanzibar?
Zanzibar isn't covered by most of the big international brands: Europcar is the only one with a confirmed presence on the island, and Avis appears solely through a single regional reseller listing rather than a branch of its own. Hertz, Sixt, Enterprise and Budget have no presence here. Instead you can compare established regional suppliers such as Autounion, NUCarrentals and Surprice alongside Europcar.
