Downtown Columbus and the Short North Arts District are walkable for a short visit, and the Ohio State University campus area is well served by campus transit. But Columbus's suburbs — Dublin, Easton Town Center, Polaris — and its business parks sit well outside walking range, and the city's public transit doesn't cover the metro area comprehensively. A hire car is the standard way to move between the city's business, retail and university districts.

Columbus also sits centrally in Ohio, within a few hours of Cincinnati, Cleveland and the state's rural Amish Country around Holmes County — about 90 minutes east. For business travellers visiting the city's insurance, retail and logistics headquarters, or leisure visitors wanting to combine a Columbus stay with a wider Ohio loop, a hire car opens up the whole state.
