Why renting a car in Málaga pays off

Málaga is far more than its old town and the Picasso museum. The coast stretches for miles in both directions — Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Marbella to the west, Rincón de la Victoria and Nerja to the east — while just inland the landscape turns dramatically with the white villages of the Axarquía, the gorge at El Chorro and Ronda perched on its cliff. The cercanías train follows the western coast and the metro covers the city, but the moment you want the mountains, the wine villages of Cómpeta or a quiet cove, the timetables run out.

With your own car you skip the connections and the rigid bus schedules, and you decide whether today is a beach day in Maro or a drive up to Antequera and the Torcal limestone formations. For a week's holiday, car hire almost always works out cheaper and more flexible than chaining together organised day trips — and it lets you reach the corners of the province that coaches simply don't bother with.

What to know before you drive in Málaga

  • You drive on the right. If you're used to the UK or Ireland, take your first roundabout slowly and remember the bulk of the car now sits on your left. An automatic makes the switch far easier — but book one early, because cheap automatics are scarce and sell out fast.
  • Manual is the default. Most budget car hire in Spain is manual, so if you only drive an automatic at home, reserve one well in advance rather than gambling on availability at the counter.
  • Mind the insurance excess. Basic cover (CDW) handles collision and theft but leaves you liable for a hefty excess on any damage. You can reduce it to zero at booking — usually cheaper than the deposits and add-ons pushed at the desk.
  • Your licence is fine. A valid UK or EU photocard licence is accepted for short tourist stays — no international permit needed. Bring your passport for ID and a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit.
  • Roads and parking. The A-7 coastal road and AP-7 toll motorway run the length of the Costa del Sol; inland the A-45 and A-92 are fast and free. Use blue-zone bays or car parks in the city, and avoid driving into the narrow old centre. Compare car hire prices for Málaga here ↗

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Málaga?
For anything longer than a day or two, yes. The city itself is walkable, but the best of the province — the Axarquía villages, Ronda, El Chorro, the quieter beaches around Nerja and Maro — is poorly served by public transport. A car saves you waiting around for connections and lets you mix beach days with mountain drives.
What do I need to rent a car in Málaga?
A valid driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit, and usually to be 21 or over (with a young-driver surcharge under 25). Bring your passport for ID. A UK or EU licence is fine — no international permit needed for short stays.
Can I drive to the Caminito del Rey from Málaga?
Yes. It's roughly an hour inland via the A-45 and A-357, with car parks at both ends of the walkway. Book your Caminito tickets and your parking slot in advance, as both fill up — and note the walk is one-way, with a shuttle bus linking the entrances.
Manual or automatic in Málaga?
Most cheap rentals are manual. If you only drive automatic at home, book one well ahead — automatics are limited and go quickly, especially in summer. They also make the coastal traffic and the steep inland roads up to villages like Frigiliana much less stressful.
What does the basic insurance cover?
Basic cover (CDW) handles collision and theft but leaves you with an excess you'd pay on any damage. You can cut it to zero at booking, which is usually cheaper than the cover sold at the desk. If your premium credit card already covers car hire, check the terms before paying for extras.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Málaga?
We compare the big international names (Sixt, Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Alamo, Enterprise, Budget) alongside trusted Málaga local firms such as Niza Cars, Centauro and OK Mobility — over 1,000 providers in total. You see each price and book whichever suits you best, with free cancellation.
