Lloret de Mar runs on its seafront promenade and nightlife, and the town itself is entirely walkable. But the Costa Brava is best enjoyed once you can leave the tourist strip behind and chase the coves buses don't reach: Tossa de Mar, with its walled old town, is just 20 minutes along the coastal road, and Calella de Palafrugell or Cap de Creus are a little over an hour away, with scenery that justifies the detour.

A hire car also solves the arrival leg: since Lloret has no airport, most visitors land in Girona or Barcelona and need to get to the coast anyway. With your own car, that first stretch becomes part of the trip rather than a logistics headache, and it also opens up Girona city or the Emporda region without relying on organised day trips.
