Why hire a car in Corfu

Corfu is greener and hillier than most Greek islands, and that shape is exactly why a car matters here. The UNESCO-listed Old Town of Kerkyra is a maze of Venetian alleys, almost entirely pedestrian, so you won't want a car there — but the moment you leave it, the island opens up into places a bus route simply doesn't reach on a useful schedule: the turquoise cove and monastery at Paleokastritsa, the sandstone stacks of the "Canal d'Amour" at Sidari, the harbourside village of Kassiopi in the north-east, and the sunset viewpoint above Pelekas that locals still consider the best on the island.

Corfu's interior is mountainous, especially around Mount Pantokrator in the north, with narrower, winding roads that reward a bit of patience and a compact car rather than a large SUV. The east coast towns like Benitses and Dassia are busier and more built-up, while the north-west coast toward Angelokastro and Paleokastritsa is where the scenery gets dramatic. A hire car lets you string all of it together in a day — Achilleion Palace in the morning, lunch in the hills, sunset at Pelekas — rather than picking one destination and building a whole day around getting there and back.

What to know before you drive in Corfu

  • Collect at Corfu Airport (CFU). The airport is unusually close to Corfu Town — about 3 km, with the final approach flying low over the sea and the town itself. Hire desks are in the arrivals hall, so you can be on the road within 15–20 minutes of landing. Compare Corfu car hire prices →
  • Greece drives on the right. Coastal roads are generally in good condition, but the roads climbing toward Mount Pantokrator and through the interior are narrow and winding. Speed limit is 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on the main roads.
  • The Old Town is car-free. Kerkyra's historic centre is largely pedestrian, so plan to park at the edge of town — near the New Fortress or one of the seafront car parks — rather than trying to drive in.
  • North coast villages. Sidari, Paleokastritsa and Kassiopi are all comfortably reachable by car within 30–45 minutes of Corfu Town, but distances feel longer on the winding coastal sections — allow extra time rather than rushing.
  • Petrol stations. Fuel up in Corfu Town or one of the larger coastal resorts before heading into the hills or the far north — stations thin out quickly away from the main routes.
  • Getting to the mainland or Paxos. Regular ferries link Corfu to Igoumenitsa on the Greek mainland (around 1h15) and to Patras, with a popular day-trip ferry to the small island of Paxos and an international route to Saranda in Albania. Leave the hire car at the port car park if you're taking a day trip.

Where to collect your hire car in Corfu

Corfu Airport (CFU), about 3 km from Corfu Town, is the main pickup hub — one of the closest airports to a Greek island capital. Some agencies also offer pickup points in town itself.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Corfu?
Yes, especially if you want to see beyond Corfu Town. Buses connect the main resorts but run infrequently to villages like Paleokastritsa, Sidari and Kassiopi. A hire car gets you to the north coast, Angelokastro and Achilleion Palace on your own schedule, without waiting for a return bus.
Where do I pick up a hire car in Corfu?
Corfu Airport (CFU) is the main pickup point and is unusually close to town — about 3 km, one of the shortest airport-to-capital distances of any Greek island. All major agencies have desks in the arrivals hall, and some also offer pickup points in Corfu Town itself.
Are the roads in Corfu difficult to drive?
The coastal roads are generally well maintained, but the interior and the roads around Mount Pantokrator in the north are narrower and winding, with plenty of switchbacks. A compact car is easier to manoeuvre than a large SUV on these sections, and it's worth driving a little slower than you would at home.
Can I drive into Corfu's Old Town?
Not really — the historic centre of Kerkyra is largely pedestrian and its alleys are too narrow for cars. Park at one of the car parks near the New Fortress or along the seafront and walk in; it's a small area, easily covered on foot.
Can I take a ferry from Corfu to nearby destinations?
Yes. Corfu has regular ferry links to Igoumenitsa on the Greek mainland (about 1h15) and to Patras, plus a day-trip ferry to the small island of Paxos and a route to Saranda in Albania. If you're taking a ferry, leave your hire car at the port car park rather than trying to bring it aboard.
Which car hire companies operate in Corfu?
International brands including Hertz, Avis and Europcar operate at Corfu Airport alongside local Greek agencies. Local operators often know the island's roads well and can be competitive on compact cars, which handle the narrower routes toward Pantokrator and the north coast more easily.
