Rent a Car in Detroit

It's fitting that the Motor City itself is built for driving. Downtown and the Riverwalk are walkable in sections, but Detroit's real attractions — The Henry Ford museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn, the Detroit Institute of Arts in Midtown, the suburbs of Royal Oak and Ferndale — sit kilometres apart with limited transit connecting them. A hire car is the practical way to see the metro area as intended.

Detroit is also a useful base for the wider Great Lakes region. Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan are about 45 minutes west, and the Canadian side of Niagara Falls is roughly a four-hour drive east via Ontario (a passport is required for the border crossing). For business travellers with meetings across the automotive corridor — Dearborn, Auburn Hills, Warren — a hire car is standard practice rather than an optional extra.
