Goldcar: Real Reviews and How to Avoid Their Damage Charges
Is Goldcar reliable? What Which? and Spain's OCU actually found about counter upselling and damage disputes, and how to protect yourself before you book.
Goldcar shows up constantly in budget car rental searches for Spain, and just as constantly in warnings from other travelers. Here’s what’s actually documented, separated from the anecdotes — and a concrete plan to protect yourself either way.
What Which? and Spain’s OCU actually found
This isn’t just forum chatter. In August 2024, the UK consumer body Which? ran an undercover investigation at Alicante and Malaga airports and found Goldcar staff giving customers false information about their insurance: telling testers they had “no protection” despite valid coverage already included under Goldcar’s own terms, and misrepresenting what excess reimbursement insurance actually covers. Which? reported Goldcar (along with another operator) to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority as a result. What makes this more than a one-off: Which? had already caught the same behavior on camera back in 2019, at which point Goldcar committed to large-scale change. The 2024 findings suggest that commitment didn’t fully stick.
Separately, in July 2025, Spain’s consumer organization OCU filed a formal complaint with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs against Goldcar — alongside Centauro, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt — over abusive contract clauses and lack of transparency, including contract terms not disclosed until signing at the counter, unclear insurance and deposit pricing, and what OCU described as a “total imbalance” in how damage claims get assessed, including charges for pre-existing or barely visible damage. This is a formal complaint requesting regulatory investigation, not yet an adjudicated ruling — it’s accurate to call it a documented, serious concern, not a proven verdict.
To be fair about what this evidence shows: it’s a real, sourced pattern of aggressive upselling and contested damage charges — not proof that every Goldcar rental ends badly, and not evidence unique to Goldcar alone. Which?’s own testing found other operators using similar tactics, and OCU’s complaint names four other major companies in the same breath.
Reviews are mixed, not uniformly bad
It’s worth saying plainly: plenty of travelers report smooth, pressure-free pickups with Goldcar, and price is the genuine reason people keep booking with them — Goldcar is a real budget option, not a company on the verge of collapse. The insurance friction and damage disputes are a documented trade-off that comes with the low price, not evidence that every rental goes wrong.
How to protect yourself before you even arrive
- Buy excess insurance (ERI) online before you travel. Which?’s investigation found counter policies can cost up to £183 more per week than booking the equivalent cover in advance.
- Print your insurance confirmation and bring it with you. Testers in the Which? investigation were told their existing coverage was invalid, or only applied to the other vehicle in a collision — both false claims according to the investigation. Having your policy in hand on paper makes that kind of claim much harder to push.
- If you’re pressured at the counter, write your objection directly on the rental contract before signing, note the staff member’s name, and complain to Goldcar’s head office immediately rather than waiting until you’re home and the moment has passed.
How to protect yourself at pickup and return
Photograph and video the entire car — every panel, the wheels, the interior, the fuel gauge and odometer — at both pickup and drop-off, with timestamps. Spain’s OCU specifically calls out disputes over “invisible” pre-existing damage as a recurring complaint, which makes your own evidence trail the single most effective protection available. Ask for a written or stamped confirmation at return noting the fuel level and that no damage was flagged — a small ask that resolves most disputes before they can start.
If a damage charge shows up anyway
Submit a dispute through Goldcar’s online claims form right away, attaching your pickup and return photos directly. Response times aren’t independently verified, so don’t expect an immediate resolution — follow up in writing if you don’t hear back within a reasonable window. If Goldcar doesn’t resolve it, EU residents can get free help with cross-border disputes from the European Consumer Centre Network, and a credit card chargeback through your card issuer is a real avenue worth exploring. Keep every piece of correspondence — you’ll need it if you escalate.
