Renting a Car Under 25: Fees, Rules and How to Pay Less
Renting a car under 25 explained: young driver fees, age limits, documents, insurance and practical ways to avoid nasty surprises.
Renting a car under 25 is possible in many places, but it is rarely as simple as picking the cheapest headline price. The catch is the young driver fee, and sometimes the real catch is hidden in the category restrictions.
If you are 21 to 24, you can usually rent a small or compact car in popular European destinations. If you are 18 to 20, choices narrow quickly.
What the fee actually is
A young driver fee is an extra daily charge added because the supplier treats younger drivers as higher risk. It may be paid at booking or at the counter depending on the supplier. That distinction matters: a cheap rate can stop being cheap once the desk adds a daily fee.
Always check the total rental conditions, not only the first price card.

Age rules vary
There is no single global rule. Minimum age depends on country, supplier, car category and licence history. A company may rent an economy car to a 21-year-old but refuse a convertible or luxury model. Some require you to have held your licence for at least one year.
If your trip crosses borders, confirm that young drivers are allowed to take the car outside the pickup country. Cross-border permission and young driver rules are separate conditions.
Documents and payment
Bring a full driving licence, passport or ID, booking voucher and a payment card in the main driver’s name. A credit card is still the smoothest option because many suppliers block the deposit on it. Debit cards can work with some suppliers, but never assume.
If you are unsure about cards, read the terms carefully before paying. It is similar to the insurance question in our guide to car rental insurance: the important detail is in the conditions, not the advert.
How to reduce the cost
Book early, choose economy or compact, avoid airport desks with poor reviews, keep the rental period clean and compare the final price including fees. A weekly booking can sometimes be better value than several short rentals.
Adding an older driver as the main driver only works if that person genuinely drives and holds the card. Do not list someone as main driver just to dodge a fee; if the younger person has an accident while not correctly named, insurance can fail.
At pickup
Ask the desk to confirm the young driver fee, deposit, fuel policy, mileage and insurance excess before signing. Photograph the car and keep all documents until the deposit is released.
Under 25 does not mean you should avoid renting. It means you need to compare the whole offer. The cheapest visible price is often not the cheapest trip.
