Off-Airport Car Rental in Italy: City Pick-Up vs Airport and What It Saves

Rome Fiumicino's off-airport zone saves €50–100 per week. Florence has no motorway airport — city pickup is always better. Here's the breakdown for Italy's main airports.

Italy’s major airports all have off-airport rental options — some as formal off-terminal compounds with free shuttles, others as city-centre offices a short taxi or train ride away. The concession fee at Italian airports typically runs 12–18% of the rental. On longer summer rentals, the saving is substantial.

Rome Fiumicino (FCO): the biggest off-airport saving in Italy

Fiumicino is Italy’s busiest international airport and has the most developed off-airport rental infrastructure. Several companies operate from an industrial zone approximately 3–5 km from the terminal, reachable by free shuttle.

Off-airport companies at FCO: Goldcar, Centauro, Drivalia, Sicily By Car, Maggiore (some locations), and various local Italian agencies. Major chains (Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt) primarily operate from on-terminal locations in Terminal 3.

Shuttle: branded company shuttles run from the arrivals area (follow signs for car rental shuttles, not car hire desks inside the terminal). Frequency: every 15–30 min. Journey to off-airport facility: 10–15 min.

Saving: €50–€100 per week on typical summer rentals (€300–600/week range). This is the highest absolute saving at any Italian airport.

Best for: 7+ day rentals, arrivals before 20:00, flexible schedule on arrival day.

Return logistics: confirm off-airport office hours match your departure time. Some FCO off-airport offices close at 22:00 or 23:00 — manageable for most flight schedules, but check.

Rome Ciampino (CIA): smaller airport, fewer options

Ciampino is Rome’s secondary airport (Ryanair, easyJet), 15 km southeast of the city. Off-airport options are more limited here — most companies are in small lots adjacent to the airport rather than a dedicated compound.

Alternatively: take the Terravision or SIT bus to Roma Termini (40 min, €4–6), then use a city-centre rental office. Several agencies have desks at or near Roma Termini. This works well if your first day is in Rome.

Catania Fontanarossa (CTA): Via Acquicella zone

Catania’s airport serves Sicily’s east coast. Off-airport rental companies operate from the Via Acquicella area, a commercial zone adjacent to the airport perimeter.

Companies: Goldcar, Sicily By Car, Hertz (some), local Sicilian agencies. Shuttle from arrivals to Via Acquicella: 5–10 min, free.

Saving: 12–16% vs on-terminal. Catania airport surcharges are significant in summer — worth the minimal shuttle effort.

Local tip: Sicilian local agencies (Sicily By Car, Maggiore local) sometimes offer the best Catania prices with competitive insurance terms.

Naples Capodichino (NAP): city centre alternative

Naples Airport (Capodichino) is only 6 km from the city centre. This makes it one of the most practical airports for skipping the airport desk entirely and picking up from a city-centre office.

Option 1: taxi from airport to city-centre rental office (€15–20, 15–20 min). Then drive from the city. This works if you’re spending time in Naples first.

Option 2: city bus (ANM line 3S or Alibus) to Piazza Garibaldi (Naples central station), then walk to nearby rental offices. Cost: €3–5.

Saving: 12–15% vs airport terminal. The city-centre savings partially offset the taxi/bus cost, with net saving increasing on longer rentals.

Naples driving note: Naples city traffic is notoriously aggressive. Many visitors prefer to pick up the car and drive out immediately rather than navigating the city centre first. Airport pickup avoids this problem — weigh the saving against the stress.

Florence (FLR / Peretola): city pickup is the standard choice

Florence Airport (Amerigo Vespucci/Peretola, FLR) has no motorway connection — it sits in a suburban area with limited road access. Most car rental guides recommend picking up in the city (Florence Santa Maria Novella train station area, or from the Viale Belfiore / Porta al Prato zone) rather than at the airport.

Reasons:

  • Airport road access from FLR is congested and poorly signed for rental car exits
  • City offices are better positioned for starting a Tuscany road trip
  • Florence centre is ZTL — you can’t park or drive in the historic core anyway. Pick up the car when you’re ready to leave the city.

Recommended approach: arrive in Florence by train (from Rome, Bologna, or Pisa Airport via shuttle), spend your time in the city without a car, pick up the rental on departure morning from a city office, and drive directly into Tuscany.

Milan Malpensa (MXP): off-terminal buildings

Malpensa has a large rental car facility in multi-storey car park buildings adjacent to — but outside — the terminal. Most major chains operate from Terminal 1’s car park structure; this is technically “off-terminal” but with no shuttle needed — it’s a short walk.

True off-airport operations (with shuttles and larger saving) exist for some budget operators. Check when booking whether the listed location requires a shuttle — the savings and logistics vary significantly.

Milan alternative: Milan has excellent rail links. Malpensa Express to Milano Centrale takes 52 min (€13). From Milano Centrale, city-centre rental offices are walkable or a short taxi. For rentals starting in Lombardy or the Italian Lakes, this is efficient.

Practical tips for Italian airports

ZTL awareness: Italy’s historic city centres all have ZTL camera zones. If you’re picking up from a city office and need to pass through a ZTL to reach it, check the ZTL map first. Getting a fine on the way to pick up the car defeats the purpose.

Autostrada tolls: factor in that many approaches from Italian airports to tourist destinations involve tolled autostrada. The saving on the rental fee may partially offset toll costs on some routes.

Booking ahead: off-airport Italian agencies have smaller fleets. Summer availability disappears fast. Book 4+ weeks ahead for July–August.
