Off-Airport Car Rental in Spain: How to Save on the Concession Fee
Málaga, Alicante, Barcelona, Madrid and Seville all have off-airport rental offices with free shuttles. Here's where they are, what they save, and which airports make it most worthwhile.
Spain’s busiest tourist airports — Málaga, Alicante, Barcelona El Prat, Madrid Barajas, and Seville — all have off-airport rental locations with free shuttle buses. The concession fee at Spanish airports runs 12–18% of the rental total. On a typical 10-day summer rental, going off-airport saves €40–€100.
Here’s where the off-airport locations are at each airport and what to expect.
Málaga Airport (AGP): biggest saving in Spain
Málaga is Spain’s busiest tourist rental market and has the most developed off-airport rental infrastructure. Several companies operate from the Cortijo de Miraflores zone, a business/industrial area approximately 3 km from the terminal.
Companies with off-airport Málaga locations: Goldcar, Centauro, Drivalia, ClickRent, and others. Some international chains (Europcar, Hertz, Sixt) also have off-terminal desks near the airport approach road.
Shuttle: free, branded company shuttle. Runs every 15–30 minutes. Follow signs for rental car shuttles outside arrivals (Terminal 3) — dedicated bus bays.
Saving: 15–20% compared to on-terminal desks. On a peak-season 7-day rental (€350–450), saving of €50–€90.
Best for: full summer week or longer. The shuttle overhead (20–30 min) is negligible on longer rentals.
Caution: peak July–August, off-airport offices can be busy on arrival days. Allow time.
Alicante Airport (ALC): city offices near the train station
Alicante Airport is 12 km from Alicante city centre. Several rental companies have city offices near the main train/bus station (Alicante Estació / TRAM) rather than a dedicated off-airport compound.
Getting to city offices: take the C-6 TRAM from the airport (20 min, €1.45) to Alicante centre, then walk to the rental office. Or taxi (€15).
Companies with Alicante city offices: Goldcar, Centauro, some local agencies. Major chains are primarily at the airport terminal.
Saving: 12–15% vs terminal. Offset partially by transfer cost (TRAM fare or taxi).
Best for: travellers comfortable navigating the city on arrival. The TRAM connection makes it viable even without a car transfer.
Barcelona El Prat (BCN): off-site compound vs terminal
Barcelona El Prat has a dedicated off-airport rental compound accessible by shuttle, plus several companies operating from car parks adjacent to — but technically outside — the terminal buildings.
Off-terminal companies: Goldcar, Surprice, Centauro operate from off-site compounds with free shuttles. Major chains (Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Sixt) have on-terminal desks in T1 and T2.
Shuttle pickup: outside arrivals at the designated rental shuttle bus area. Runs every 15–20 min.
Saving: 12–16% vs terminal. Barcelona airport rates are among Spain’s highest in summer — the absolute saving is significant.
ZBE note: Barcelona’s low emission zone (ZBE) covers much of the city. Ensure the rental car meets ZBE standards if you’re driving into central Barcelona — this is a vehicle category issue, not an airport issue, but worth confirming when picking up.
Madrid Barajas (MAD): off-site M30 area
Madrid Barajas is large and complex (Terminals T1–T4). Several rental companies operate from off-site facilities near the M30 ring road area north of the city, accessible by shuttle.
Companies with off-airport Madrid options: Goldcar, Centauro, and several local Madrid agencies. Major chains (Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, Enterprise) have T1/T4 terminal desks.
Shuttle: off-airport companies run shuttles from the terminal area. Allow 30–40 min for the shuttle plus check-in process.
Saving: 10–15% vs terminal. Madrid airport surcharges are lower than Málaga or Alicante but still significant on longer rentals.
Alternative: Madrid has excellent public transport (Metro Line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios, then interchange). For travellers whose first destination is Madrid city, arriving by metro and picking up the car later from a city office is often the cheapest option.
Seville Airport (SVQ): city office only
Seville Airport is 10 km northeast of the city. It’s a smaller airport — off-airport compounds with shuttles are less developed here. For some companies, the saving comes from using their city centre office (near Seville Santa Justa train station or the city centre) rather than the airport terminal desk.
Getting to city: Airport Bus EA (€4, 30–40 min) to Prado de San Sebastián bus station, then taxi or walk to city office.
Best for: travellers spending time in Seville before driving. Pick up the car on departure day from the city office rather than on arrival at the airport.
Practical tips for all Spanish airports
Book off-airport in advance. Off-airport companies have smaller fleets. In peak summer, book at least 3–4 weeks ahead.
Confirm office hours. Most off-airport Spain offices open 8:00–20:00 or 8:00–22:00. Late night arrivals face closed offices — check carefully if landing after 20:00.
Return logistics. Confirm you can return the car during office hours on your departure day. If your flight leaves at 6am, returning to an off-airport office that opens at 8am is not possible — clarify at booking whether after-hours drop-off is available.
AENA airport surcharge: on-terminal companies pay AENA’s concession; off-terminal do not. The off-terminal saving is real but the shuttle adds 20–40 minutes each way to your journey.
