Airport vs Off-Airport Car Rental: Is It Worth the Extra Effort?

Off-airport pickup saves 10–20% on most rentals — but only if the timing and logistics make sense. Here's when the saving is real and when the airport desk is the smarter choice.

Every rental car at an airport costs more than the same car at a city office. The difference is the concession fee — a surcharge rental companies pay to operate inside airport terminals, passed directly to customers. It adds 10–20% to the total rental cost, before taxes.

The saving from avoiding it is real. Whether it’s worth the extra logistics depends on your specific trip.

What the concession fee actually is

Airport authorities charge rental companies a concession fee for the right to operate on airport premises — typically 8–12% of revenue. Companies add their own margin on top. The total surcharge reaching the customer is usually 10–20% of the base rental rate.

On a 7-day rental at €350, that’s €35–€70 extra. On a 14-day rental at €600, it’s €60–€120. The saving scales with rental length.

The concession fee appears in the price breakdown at checkout — sometimes labelled “airport surcharge,” “concession recovery fee,” or similar. It’s not hidden, but it’s easy to miss if you’re comparing total prices between airport and city options on the same platform.

How off-airport pickup works

Rental companies with off-airport locations operate a free shuttle bus between the airport and their facility. The process:

  1. Collect your luggage as normal
  2. Exit arrivals and follow signs to rental car shuttle buses (or walk to the designated pickup area outside the terminal)
  3. Board the company’s free shuttle to their off-airport facility
  4. Complete the rental desk check-in and collect the car

Total extra time: 15–45 minutes depending on shuttle frequency and facility distance. Shuttles typically run every 15–30 minutes.

Off-airport facilities are usually in industrial zones 2–5 km from the terminal. The shuttle is free; the drive from the facility is your regular rental.

When off-airport pickup makes sense

Long rental (7+ days): the saving is largest here. A 10-day rental worth €500 saves €50–100 by going off-airport. The 30-minute shuttle overhead is negligible compared to the saving.

Daytime arrival with a flexible schedule: if you land at 11am with no urgent commitments, the shuttle is a minor inconvenience.

Travelling light: easier to manage luggage on the shuttle.

Comparison shopping: off-airport locations from smaller local agencies sometimes offer significantly better rates than any airport desk, even before the concession fee.

When airport pickup is the better choice

Late night or early morning arrival: off-airport office hours are typically 8am–8pm. Some close earlier on weekends. If you land at 10pm and need the car immediately, the airport desk is your only option.

Very short rental (1–2 days): the shuttle overhead is proportionally larger relative to the saving.

Tight connection to onward transport: if you need to drive immediately after landing with no buffer, the airport desk removes one variable.

Group with lots of luggage: manageable but more awkward on a shuttle.

First time driving in a foreign country: the airport desk’s familiar, contained environment reduces stress on arrival.

The off-airport saving: realistic numbers

Rental lengthBase rateAirport surcharge (15%)Off-airport saving
3 days€120€18€18
7 days€280€42€42
14 days€560€84€84
21 days€800€120€120

These are conservative estimates. In high-demand markets (Florida, Spain summer, Italian airports), the airport surcharge can reach 18–20%.

What to check before booking off-airport

Office hours: confirm the office is open when you arrive. A 20:30 landing when the office closes at 20:00 is a problem.

Shuttle availability on arrival day: some companies don’t operate shuttles on public holidays or very early Sunday mornings. Confirm.

Drop-off hours: if you’re returning the car early morning before a flight, the off-airport office may not be open. Some companies allow after-hours drop-off with a key box. Confirm the return logistics match your departure time.

Total comparison: factor in any extra driving time from the off-airport facility if it adds distance. An off-airport facility 10 km in the wrong direction reduces the net saving.
