Car Rental in Tenerife: Airports, Zones and Best Pickup Tips

Renting a car in Tenerife? Here's what you need to know: which airport to use, how to reach Teide, north vs south weather, and why there are no toll roads on the island.

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and one of the best islands in Europe to explore by car. The public bus network (TITSA, locally called “guagua”) is reliable between main towns, but Teide National Park, the Anaga Rural Park and the remote villages of the interior are only reachable by road. A rental car opens up the island properly.

Two airports: which one to use?

Tenerife has two airports and choosing the right one matters.

Tenerife Sur (TFS) — also called Reina Sofía — is in the south of the island, close to Los Cristianos, Las Américas and Costa Adeje. Most package holiday flights land here. If you’re staying in the south, this is your airport.

Tenerife Norte (TFN) — also called Los Rodeos — is near Santa Cruz and La Laguna, in the north. It handles more inter-island flights and some European routes. If you’re staying in Puerto de la Cruz or exploring the north, this is more convenient.

Rental companies operate at both airports. Prices are similar, but Sur has more competition and therefore more availability in peak season.

Average car rental prices in Tenerife (2026)

Tenerife has year-round demand — it’s a winter sun destination as much as a summer one. Prices are relatively stable compared to Ibiza or Mallorca, but July and August still push rates up.

North vs south: weather and driving conditions

Tenerife’s two halves are genuinely different climates. The north is green, wetter and cooler — Puerto de la Cruz sits under cloud for stretches in winter. The south is dry, sunny and warm almost every day of the year.

The TF-21 road connecting the south coast to Teide passes through both climate zones as it climbs to 2,356 metres. You can leave Los Cristianos in 30-degree heat and arrive at the Teide cable car in cloud and 8 degrees. Pack a layer if you’re heading up.

Driving to Teide National Park

Teide is the main reason most people rent a car in Tenerife. The TF-21 is a paved mountain road with no significant technical difficulty — a standard Economy car handles it fine. A few things to know:

  • The summit cable car fills up fast. Arrive by 9am or book tickets in advance online.
  • Parking at the Teide base station is free but limited. Arrive early or use the roadside laybys lower down.
  • Snow can close the upper section (above 2,000m) in winter. Check conditions before you go.
  • No toll on TF-21 or anywhere else on the island — Tenerife has no toll roads.

Anaga Rural Park

The Anaga massif in the northeast corner of the island is spectacular and almost completely untouched by tourism. The roads here — the TF-12 and the network of tracks leading down to villages like Taganana and Benijo — are narrow, steep and winding. A smaller car is better. An SUV is unnecessary; the roads are paved throughout.

Are there toll roads in Tenerife?

No. Tenerife has no toll roads. All motorways and roads on the island are free, including the TF-1 (south motorway), TF-5 (north motorway) and TF-21 (Teide road).

Practical tips

South vs north base. Los Cristianos and Las Américas are practical bases for Teide day trips. Puerto de la Cruz works better for the north and Anaga. If you want to cover both, pick a central location like Candelaria or El Médano.

Petrol stations. Well distributed across the island. Fill up in Santa Cruz or La Orotava before heading into Anaga — stations get sparse in the interior.

Parking in Santa Cruz. The capital has paid street parking in the centre. The Parque García Sanabria area has accessible paid lots. Not a problem compared to Spanish mainland cities.

Insurance. Standard CDW with an excess is the norm. The excess in Tenerife typically runs €800–1,500. Check whether your credit card covers this before paying for SCDW at the counter.

When is the best time to rent a car in Tenerife

Unlike most Mediterranean destinations, Tenerife doesn’t have a clear off-season. The south is warm and sunny in January as much as in August.

  • November to March: excellent value. Fewer tourists, lower prices, good weather in the south.
  • April to June: the sweet spot. Pleasant everywhere on the island, Teide is fully open, prices still reasonable.
  • July and August: busy and pricier, but Tenerife handles it better than Ibiza or Mallorca.
  • September and October: good option. Summer crowds thin and rates start to ease.
