Car Rental in Ibiza: Pickup Spots, Prices and What to Know
Planning to rent a car in Ibiza? Here's what you need to know: where to pick up, how much it costs, what happens with Formentera, and how to survive August traffic.
Ibiza is small — about 572 km² — but public transport won’t get you to the beaches that matter. The Ibibus network covers the main resorts and Ibiza Town in summer, but the north of the island is another story. If you want to reach Cala Bassa, Cala d’Hort or the quiet coves around Portinatx, a rental car is the only realistic option. This guide covers what you need to know before you book.
Is renting a car in Ibiza worth it?
It depends on your trip. If you’re staying in San Antonio or Playa d’en Bossa and sticking to the club strip, you can get by with taxis and the night bus. If you want to explore the island at your own pace, a car makes the difference.
A rental car in Ibiza makes sense if:
- You’re staying more than 3 nights
- Your accommodation is outside the main resort strips
- You want to reach north island coves (Portinatx, Cala Xarraca, Cala Mastella)
- You’re travelling with children or luggage that makes taxis expensive
Skip the car if you’re based in Ibiza Town for a short stay — parking is a nightmare and walking covers most of what you’ll want to see.
Average car rental prices in Ibiza (2026)
Ibiza pricing swings harder than almost any other Spanish island. July and August command a serious premium. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for summer travel to lock in reasonable rates.
| Category | Low season | High season |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | €20–30/day | €45–70/day |
| Compact | €30–45/day | €60–90/day |
| Midsize SUV | €55–80/day | €100–150/day |

Where to pick up your rental car in Ibiza
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) is the only realistic pickup point for most visitors. All major rental companies have desks in the arrivals hall, and there’s no off-airport shuttle option worth considering given the island’s size.
The airport is about 7 km from Ibiza Town. If you’re arriving late and your hotel is nearby, consider taking a taxi and picking up the car the next morning — it avoids the night-rate surcharge some companies add to after-hours returns.
There is no central train station or ferry port car hire in any meaningful sense. The airport is your starting point.
Can you take a rental car to Formentera?
No. Rental cars are not allowed on the Formentera ferry.
The crossing from Ibiza Port to La Savina takes around 30 minutes (fast ferry) or up to 1 hour (slow ferry). Car ferries do run this route, but every major rental company in Ibiza explicitly prohibits taking their vehicles to Formentera. Attempting it voids your insurance.
The practical approach: leave your car at the port car park in Ibiza Town, take the passenger ferry, and hire a bicycle, moped or golf buggy on Formentera. That’s how locals and regular visitors do it.
What insurance to get
The same rules apply here as anywhere in Spain:
- CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): standard on most rentals, but always comes with an excess — typically €800–2,000 in Ibiza.
- SCDW or zero-excess cover: reduces your liability to zero. Adds €10–25/day depending on the company and category.
- Credit card cover: some Visa and Mastercard Gold/Premium cards cover the rental excess. Check your card’s terms before you travel — if cover is confirmed, basic CDW is enough.
One Ibiza-specific note: August parking lots at popular beaches are tight and busy. Minor scrapes on wing mirrors and bumpers are common. Make sure your excess is covered before you park anywhere near a cliff-side cove.
Driving in Ibiza: what to know before you go
The north island roads are narrow
The road network in northern Ibiza — around Portinatx, Sant Joan de Labritja and Cala Xarraca — is a mix of single-track lanes and poorly signed rural roads. Compact cars handle this better than SUVs or minivans. A standard Economy or Compact category is enough for the whole island.
Club zone access at night
The stretch between San Antonio and Playa d’en Bossa sees serious congestion from midnight to 4am in summer. If you’re driving back to your accommodation after a night out, expect delays. Some access roads near Ushuaïa and Pacha are effectively closed to private vehicles during peak hours and events. Check the route before you rely on GPS.
Summer gridlock is real
In July and August, the road from Ibiza Town to San Antonio (C-731) can back up badly on weekend evenings. The interior roads via Sant Josep are slower by distance but often faster in practice. Factor this in if you have a ferry or flight to catch.
Parking at beaches
Free parking at Ibiza’s popular beaches is largely gone. Most access roads now have paid lots or access restrictions:
- Cala Bassa: paid parking, gets full by 11am in summer
- Cala d’Hort: paid lot, limited spaces — arrive early or park on the approach road
- Ses Salines: paid zone, heavy enforcement in peak season
- Portinatx: free but limited; walk from the village if the main lot is full
Budget around €5–8 per day for beach parking if you’re island-hopping by car.
Fuel and practical tips
Fill up in San Antonio or near the airport. Petrol stations are scarce in the north and centre of the island. If you’re heading to Portinatx, fill the tank before you leave the main road.
Return the car clean. Some Ibiza rental companies are stricter than the mainland about interior cleaning charges. If you’ve been to sandy beaches, shake out the mats before returning.
One-way rentals. Not relevant here — Ibiza Airport is always the start and end point.
When is the best time to rent a car in Ibiza
- May and early June: the best window. Roads are quiet, prices are 30–40% lower than peak, and the island is genuinely beautiful.
- July and August: expensive and congested. If you must travel then, book 6+ weeks ahead and choose a compact category.
- September and October: underrated. Weather stays good, the party crowd thins out, and prices drop fast after mid-September.
- November to April: very low demand. Many beach bars and some roads near resorts close, but the island itself stays open.
