Car Rental in Gran Canaria: Airports, Prices and Local Tips
Renting a car in Gran Canaria? Here's everything you need: airport pickup, price ranges, how to reach Roque Nublo, dunes access rules, and why there are no toll roads.
Gran Canaria packs a lot into a relatively small space. Las Palmas in the north is a proper city with museums, beaches and a working port. Maspalomas in the south is resort territory. Between them, the interior rises to nearly 2,000 metres with villages, pine forests and the iconic silhouette of Roque Nublo. A rental car is the only way to see all of it.
Do you need a rental car in Gran Canaria?
The Global Salcai bus network is better than most Canary Islands. The Las Palmas to Maspalomas corridor (route 30) runs frequently and cheaply. If you’re staying in one place and not straying far, buses work.
A car makes sense if:
- You want to reach the interior (Tejeda, Roque Nublo, Pico de las Nieves)
- You’re splitting time between the north and south of the island
- You want to explore the north coast (Agaete, Moya, the Guayadeque ravine)
- You’re staying somewhere not on the main bus route
Skip the car if you’re planted in Maspalomas for a week and happy staying local.
Where to pick up: Las Palmas Airport (LPA)
Gran Canaria has one main airport: Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), located on the east coast between Las Palmas and the south resorts. It’s well placed for both.
All major rental companies have desks in the arrivals area. The GC-1 motorway connects the airport directly to Las Palmas (north) and to Maspalomas/Playa del Inglés (south) without any toll.
There is no meaningful off-airport pickup option on Gran Canaria. The airport is the right starting point regardless of where you’re staying.

Are there toll roads in Gran Canaria?
No. Gran Canaria has no toll roads. The entire motorway network — GC-1 (east coast), GC-2 (north coast), GC-3 (interior) — is free. This makes driving significantly cheaper than Spain’s mainland.
Driving to Roque Nublo
Roque Nublo is the most-photographed natural landmark on the island — a 80-metre volcanic rock standing at 1,813 metres elevation. Getting there requires driving the GC-600 road through Tejeda.
What to know:
- A standard Economy car handles the road without difficulty. No 4x4 needed.
- The car park at the Roque Nublo trailhead has limited spaces. Arrive by 9am in summer.
- From the car park it’s a 30–40 minute walk each way on a marked trail.
- The road through Tejeda itself is worth the drive — one of the most scenic on the island.
North vs south: how to split your time
Las Palmas (north) is the cultural half of Gran Canaria. The Vegueta historic quarter, Las Canteras urban beach, the Casa de Colón museum. Good for a day or two based here.
Maspalomas (south) is the resort half. The Dunas de Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, the resort strip. Better beach weather, more tourists.
The interior connects them and is worth a dedicated half-day by car: Tejeda, Artenara (highest village on the island), the Pino de Tamadaba forest.
Maspalomas dunes: access restrictions
The Dunas de Maspalomas are a protected natural reserve. Private vehicles cannot drive on or near the dunes — access is on foot from the car parks at Playa del Inglés or Maspalomas. Parking in the immediate area is paid and fills fast in summer.
Practical tips
Las Palmas parking. The capital has paid street zones in the centre. The Vegueta quarter has a paid underground car park on Calle Juan de Quesada. Siestas mean easier parking midday.
Fuel. Fuel in the Canary Islands is cheaper than mainland Spain due to lower local taxes. Fill up freely — you won’t be caught short on Gran Canaria.
Insurance. Standard CDW with an excess of €800–1,500 is typical. No local quirks. Check your credit card cover before agreeing to SCDW at the counter.
Minimum age. Most companies require 21. Under-25 surcharges apply (typically €8–15/day).
When is the best time to rent a car in Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is a year-round destination. Unlike Mediterranean islands, it never really goes off-season.
- November to February: excellent value. European visitors escape winter here; demand stays moderate and prices are lower.
- March to May: the best time. Quiet roads, reasonable prices, consistent weather.
- June to September: busy in the south, very manageable in the interior.
- October: good shoulder month. Summer crowds thin out, rates start easing.
