Taking a Rental Car to Crete by Ferry from Athens
The overnight ferry from Piraeus to Heraklion or Chania takes 8–9 hours and is cheaper than flying with a car. Most Greek rental companies allow the crossing. Here's how to book and what to expect.
The overnight ferry from Piraeus (Athens’ port) to Crete is one of the classic Greek travel experiences — you board at 9pm, wake up in Heraklion or Chania, and step off refreshed with your car ready to drive. It’s cheaper than flying when you factor in a night’s accommodation, and most Greek rental companies allow the crossing.
The two main ferry routes to Crete
Piraeus → Heraklion (Iraklio):
- Operators: ANEK Lines, Minoan Lines (joint service under “Anek-Minoan”)
- Duration: approximately 8–9 hours (overnight)
- Departure: typically 21:00–22:00 from Piraeus Gate E1/E2
- Arrival: Heraklion: 06:00–07:00
- Frequency: daily in summer, several times weekly in winter
Piraeus → Chania (via Souda port):
- Operators: ANEK Lines
- Duration: approximately 8 hours (overnight)
- Souda port is 7 km east of Chania city — taxis and buses into town
- Frequency: daily in summer
Both routes use large modern ferries with multiple cabin categories, restaurant/bar, and dedicated car decks.
Which port to choose: Heraklion or Chania?
Heraklion (north-central Crete): Crete’s capital. Gateway to Knossos, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, the Lasithi plateau, and the east (Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Vai palm beach). Most central position on the island.
Chania (northwest Crete): the more charming of the two cities. Venetian harbour, whitewashed streets. Gateway to Samaria Gorge, the west coast (Elafonisi, Falasarna), and the Akrotiri peninsula. Better positioned if your main destination is western Crete.
If you’re planning to see the whole island: arrive at Heraklion, depart from Chania (or vice versa) with a one-way car rental. Drop fee for Heraklion–Chania one-way at major rental agencies is typically low or zero — it’s the same island.
Booking the car deck space
Car deck spaces are booked separately from passenger tickets. Steps:
- Go to the ANEK Lines or Minoan Lines website
- Select route, date, and departure time
- Add your vehicle (length matters — compact cars go in the under-4m bracket)
- Complete passenger accommodation separately (deck seats, cabin categories)
Summer booking window: for July–August sailings, book car deck spaces 4–6 weeks ahead. August departures on Friday and Sunday evenings fill fastest.
Night sailings are more popular than day sailings (which are rare on the Piraeus–Crete route). The overnight crossing avoids a hotel night, which justifies the ferry cost even if flying is nominally cheaper.
Rental company permission
Most Greek rental companies allow the Piraeus–Crete crossing. This is a well-established route and local agencies on Crete routinely issue cars that have arrived by ferry.
Local Cretan agencies: no restrictions. Renting at Heraklion or Chania airport means no ferry logistics at all — pick up and drive.
Athens-based agencies: ask specifically. Get confirmation in writing on the contract.
International chains (Athens branches): Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Avis generally permit the crossing. Some charge a crossing supplement (€15–25). Confirm in advance.
The easiest approach: if you’re flying into Athens for a few days then continuing to Crete, return your Athens rental and pick up fresh in Crete. No ferry logistics, no insurance questions.
Piraeus port logistics
Piraeus is 10 km southwest of Athens centre, accessible by Metro Line 1 (30 minutes from Syntagma). For car passengers:
- Gate E1: main departure gate for Crete ferries. GPS “Piraeus Port Gate E1”
- Arrival for vehicle loading: at least 60 minutes before departure for vehicles (90 minutes recommended in summer)
- Parking at Piraeus: limited near the port. The port area has some paid street parking; structured car parks are 10–15 minutes’ walk
If you’re driving to Piraeus from central Athens, factor in Attiki Odos toll (€2.80) and traffic. The approach to Piraeus has limited signage — use GPS navigation to the gate, not just “Piraeus port.”
Ferry cheaper than flying (with a car)
For a standard 5–7 day Crete rental, compare total cost:
Flying: Athens → Crete (Aegean, Olympic) €30–60/person + rental starting in Crete Ferry: €50–70/person (cabin) + €50–80 car deck + rental starting in Crete
The difference is often less than one night’s hotel in Athens. If you need the car in Crete and want to avoid a separate Athens rental, the ferry is a rational choice.
The summer night sailings are also a social experience — outdoor deck for departure through the Saronic Gulf islands, then dinner/sleep, then Crete arrival at dawn.
Driving in Crete
Crete has no toll roads — a useful contrast to mainland Greece. The main highway (Old National Road + E75 new motorway) runs east–west across the north coast. The E75 new national road from Heraklion toward Agios Nikolaos is fast and modern.
South coast: most paved roads but some sections in the southwest (toward Agia Roumeli, Sougia) are still unpaved tracks. Standard car insurance is voided on unpaved roads — check your contract and photograph everything before attempting south coast mountain tracks.
Mountain villages: the Amari Valley, the road to Moni Arkadi, and the Lasithi plateau roads are all paved and manageable in a standard car. The approach to Agiofarago gorge involves a short unpaved section.
July–August: extreme heat. Start early (before 8am) for mountain drives and gorge visits. Heraklion ring road has significant congestion during summer rush hours.
Practical tips
Cabin categories: on overnight sailings, cabin options range from reclining aircraft seats (deck seats — cheapest, fine for light sleepers) to 2-berth en-suite cabins (comfortable, worth it for couples). 4-berth cabins exist for families. Book your preferred cabin category at the same time as the car deck — premium cabins sell out too.
Lock the car: during the crossing, the car deck is accessible to crew only but not monitored throughout. Don’t leave valuables visible.
Heraklion port vs airport: the ferry port in Heraklion is east of the city centre, about 4 km from Heraklion Airport (HER). If you’re picking up a car at the airport after arriving by ferry, it’s a 10-minute taxi ride.
