Car Rental at Málaga Airport: Off-Airport Pickup, Toll Roads and Tips

Renting a car at Málaga Airport (AGP)? Pick up off-airport to save 15-20%, avoid the AP-7/AP-46 tolls with the free A-45, and know about the ZBE in Málaga city centre. Book early for summer.

Málaga Airport is the busiest in Andalusia and one of the top five in Spain. It serves the Costa del Sol — Marbella, Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Nerja, Ronda — and makes an excellent base for day trips to Granada, Seville, and the Alpujarras. A rental car is almost always the right choice here: the Costa del Sol is spread along 150 km of coast and buses between resorts are slow. Here’s what you need before you pick up.

Málaga Airport (AGP)

Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) has all major rental companies represented in the arrivals terminal. Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Budget, Enterprise, Goldcar, Record, OK Mobility — the selection is large.

The airport is 8 km southwest of Málaga city centre and about 15 minutes from Torremolinos and 30 minutes from Marbella via the A-7/AP-7.

Off-airport pickup: save 15-20%

This is the most effective cost-saving move at Málaga Airport. Companies with offices in the nearby Polígono Industrial La Misericordia (industrial estate just off the airport road) are not subject to the airport concession fee — a 10–15% charge on all on-terminal rentals.

How to access off-airport offices:

  • Take a taxi or Uber from arrivals (5 minutes, ~€5)
  • Some companies run a free shuttle between arrivals and their off-airport depot

For a week-long rental in summer, the concession fee savings can be €40–80. For 10+ days, the savings are significant enough to justify the shuttle transfer every time.

Companies with strong off-airport presence at AGP: Goldcar, Record, Centauro, OK Mobility, and some Sixt and Europcar locations.

AP-7 and AP-46: the toll roads

Two tolled motorways serve the Málaga area:

AP-7 (Autopista del Sol): runs west from Málaga through Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Marbella and towards Gibraltar. Fully tolled. Approximate costs: Málaga to Fuengirola (~25 km) ~€2.30; Málaga to Marbella (~55 km) ~€4.80.

AP-46 (Autopista Málaga-Ronda): connects Málaga city to Ronda via the mountains. Tolled.

Free alternative: The A-45 and A-7 (national road, not the autopista) run parallel to the AP-7 along the coast. They’re slower — passing through town centres and traffic lights — but cost nothing. For short hops between Costa del Sol resorts, the A-7 is practical. For longer distances or time-sensitive travel, pay the AP-7 toll.

Toll booths on the AP-7 accept cash and card.

ZBE Málaga city centre

Málaga city operates a ZBE (Zona de Bajas Emisiones) in the historic centre. Modern rental fleet cars (Euro 5/6) are generally permitted — they carry the C or ECO DGT environmental label. Check the label on the windscreen at pickup.

If your rental car has a B label or no label, don’t drive into the Málaga city centre ZBE. Fines are enforced by camera.

For most Costa del Sol tourists, this is irrelevant — you’re driving between resorts and not into Málaga city. But if you plan a day in the Málaga city centre (Picasso Museum, Alcazaba), confirm the car’s label at pickup.

Costa del Sol strip

The Costa del Sol coast west of Málaga runs through:

  • Torremolinos (10 km, 15 min)
  • Benalmádena (15 km, 20 min)
  • Fuengirola (30 km, 30 min)
  • Marbella (55 km, 45 min AP-7 / 60 min A-7)
  • Estepona (85 km, 65 min AP-7)
  • Gibraltar (120 km, 1h 30min via AP-7)

East of Málaga:

  • Nerja (52 km, 45 min via A-7)
  • Frigiliana (62 km, 1h — mountain village above Nerja)

One-way to Granada and Seville

Málaga is an excellent base for one-way day trips or overnight trips to:

  • Granada: 130 km, 1h 30min via A-92. The Alhambra requires advance tickets — book before travelling.
  • Seville: 200 km, 2h via A-92. Feasible as a long day trip; better as an overnight.
  • Ronda: 100 km, 1h via AP-46 (tolled) or 1h 30min via A-367 (free mountain road through El Burgo).

One-way rental returns from Málaga to Granada or Seville are common and generally low-cost.

Summer peak: book early

June–August at AGP is extremely competitive. Fleet availability drops by March–April for summer months, particularly for standard categories and specific vehicle types (SUVs, 7-seat MPVs). The price gap between early booking (January–March) and late booking (June) for the same summer week can be 60–80%.

Book summer rentals at Málaga as early as possible.

Practical tips

Fuel. Full-to-full standard. Fill up on the A-7 before returning to the airport — stations on the airport approach road tend to be more expensive.

Parking on the Costa del Sol. Beach resort parking is paid (€1–2.50/hour) in season and full by 11am in July–August. Some beach areas have free parking on the outer edge of the resort — ask locals.

Speed limits. AP-7: 120 km/h. A-7 through towns: 50 km/h (some sections 30 km/h). DGT speed cameras are common on both roads.

Minimum age. 18 at most Spanish companies, with young driver surcharge under 25.

IDP. Not required for EU or US licence holders in Spain.
